As a result, the start and end dates for the current tax year 2025-26 are 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time between these two is &#8220;within the tax year.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding how the tax year works is critical to getting any money you owe and avoiding penalties for missing deadlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may appear complicated, but you can easily calculate important dates as long as you know when your year begins and finishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you should know about the 2024\/25 tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf 2025\/26 fiscal year: <strong>6 April 2025 \u2013 5 April 2026<\/strong><br>\u25cf The tax year 2026\/27 runs from <strong>6 April 2026 through 5 April 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Self Assessment tax return deadline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/self-assessment-tax-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-assessment tax<\/a> <\/mark>applies to individuals whose earnings are not automatically taxed by their employers under the PAYE (&#8220;pay as you earn&#8221;) scheme. If you file your return after the last date but within 3 months, you incur a \u00a3100 fine. If you file later, you&#8217;ll have to pay more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOV.UK allows you to estimate penalties if you submit late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/the-future-of-self-assessment-will-digital-platform-reporting-take-over\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"799\">Self Assessment<\/a> tax returns or payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VAT Return Dates and Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that meet specific criteria must charge a tax on the goods and services (known as VAT). In the UK, for example, if your annual turnover exceeds \u00a390,000, you must register, charge VAT to your consumers, and pay the tax to HMRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To disclose what you owe, you&#8217;ll complete regular VAT returns. Even if it is not required, some companies may opt to sign up, and you can do so at any moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must register by a specific deadline in one of two scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf  You must register within 30 days of knowing that you will surpass the VAT threshold in the coming month.<br>\u25cf  If you exceed the barrier in the previous 12 months and have not yet registered, you should do so within 30 days after the end of the month in which you exceeded it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VAT payment and filing deadlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VAT returns are typically filed and paid quarterly, one calendar month, seven days after the end of the accounting period. Because you determine when your quarterly period begins at registration, specific dates vary from business to business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your timetable will cover 12 months; however, it may not correspond to calendar quarters. You must also file benefit papers on your employees&#8217; behalf every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annual registration deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting each tax year, you must register for payroll benefits online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf  The deadline to register for PAYE is 4 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PAYE remittance deadlines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PAYE usually is calculated and paid every month. You have two alternatives for sending remittances: by mail or online. You do so by issuing official documents to each employee after each tax year and a P45 form to each employee when they leave your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no fixed deadline for submitting P45 forms. The P60 form is due at the end of the month after the tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf P45 form deadline: When an employee leaves your company.<br>\u25cf P60 form deadline for the 2025\/26 tax year is 31 May 2026, and 2026\/27 is 31 May 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOV.UK has extra information about P45 and P60 forms and other benefits forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P11D deadlines if you provide your employees with benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you give employees &#8220;benefits in kind,&#8221; you may be required to submit P11D papers to HMRC. Cars, childcare, and interest-free loans are advantages outside of tax and insurance payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These forms are due three months after the end of the tax year. You&#8217;ll need to complete a separate form for each employee who received these benefits. Employers frequently give employees a copy of the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P11D deadline for 2025\/26 tax year: 6 July 2026 and 2026\/27 tax year: 6 July 2027<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Due dates for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/capital-gains-tax-calculator\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"800\">capital gains taxes<\/a> for sole traders and partnerships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/who-is-a-sole-trader-and-what-is-a-sole-trader-business\/\">sole trader<\/a>, self-employed, or a partner in a partnership, you may have to pay capital gains tax (CGT) and standard income tax. When you sell or dispose of a company asset, you must pay CGT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you sell a company-owned facility or give away gear that you use in your firm, you pay tax on the increase in the asset&#8217;s value since you purchased it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can immediately pay it if you know how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/capital-gains-tax\/\">capital gains tax<\/a> you owe. If not, you must include them in your self-assessment tax return for the year you realised the gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for the 2026\/27 tax year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf You must pay capital gains tax on assets sold in 2026\/27 before 31 January 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Corporation tax for limited companies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/close-limited-company-without-paying-any-tax\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"802\">limited companies must pay a corporation tax<\/a> on their profits. If you run a limited company, you must register for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/corporation-tax-rate-increases-in-april-2023\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"803\">corporation tax<\/a> when you start trading and file an annual company tax return calculating how much you owe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your registration date determines your company&#8217;s &#8220;accounting period,&#8221; which may or may not coincide with your fiscal year.
