Personal allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you are self-employed or an employee, the personal allowance in the UK sticks at \u00a312,570 for 2022-23. Therefore, when earning \u00a3125,140, you pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/what-is-income-tax\/\" style=\"color:#9B51E0;\">income tax<\/a> on your entire income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Trading income allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The trading allowance for 2022-23 is \u00a31,000 on any income from self-employment. You can also use it as your personal allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you earn less than the trading income allowance, you don&#8217;t need to register as self-employed and have no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/how-to-hire-an-accountant-for-tax-return\/\">tax return<\/a> filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. National Insurance contributions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Being self-employed, you are liable to pay National Insurance to HMRC on your profits which is your income &#8211; allowable expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Class 4 National Insurance contributions will increase by 1.25% for the Health and Social Care Levy. Value Added Tax (VAT)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If your company makes an annual turnover of \u00a385,000, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/how-to-find-a-businesss-vat-number\/\" style=\"color:#9B51E0;\">register for VAT<\/a>. Once registered, you can charge VAT on customers and claim back the amount you paid to suppliers on business expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>VAT type<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Rate<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Standard rate applicable on most goods and services<\/td><td>20%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Reduced rate applicable on specific goods and services<\/td><td>5%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Zero rates on goods like books, newspaper<\/td><td>0%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Business expenses<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a specific running cost for operating a business; the government allows you to deduct those costs from the taxable profit, known as allowable expenses. It includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Office costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clothing expenses, specifically uniform or protection wear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchasing things like stock and raw materials to produce goods and sell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs of business premises, including utility bills and business rates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advertising or marketing costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Costs of training employees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Capital gains tax exemption<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals need to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/how-to-avoid-capital-gains-tax-on-buy-to-let-property\/\" style=\"color:#9B51E0;\">capital gain tax<\/a> on their profit by selling or disposing of assets they own to HMRC. For the tax year 2022-23, the annual exemption of CGT is \u00a312,300. According to their tax band, any gain above the threshold level is liable to CGT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Gains above the CGT exemption threshold<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Tax rate<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Basic rate taxpayers<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Gains from other residential property<\/td><td>18%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Gains from other chargeable assets<\/td><td>10%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Higher rate taxpayers<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Gains from other residential property<\/td><td>28%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Gains from other chargeable assets<\/td><td>20%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Capital allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A company&#8217;s assets used for business are eligible for the Capital allowance, which allows them to claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/the-big-rd-tax-relief\/\">tax relief<\/a> for such assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 130% super deduction is available temporarily on most new plant and machinery investments which would qualify for 18% main rate writing down allowances. It is available from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2023. The 50% allowance for the first year of an investment would qualify for a 6% special rate writing down allowances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Increased Annual Investment Allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/annual-investment-allowance\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"468\">annual investment allowance<\/a>, which was previously \u00a3200,000 a year, is now temporarily increased to \u00a31 million till 31st March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Business rate discounts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When costs and tax is increasing for most businesses, retail, hospitality and leisure businesses will get a 50% discount on business rates up to \u00a3110,000 per business. Plus, Increase in business rate multipliers is temporarily paused for 2022-23. However, the government still reduced this discount from a previous discount rate of 66% to help businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Marriage allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Being married or in a civil partnership, you can get some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/tax-benefits-on-investing-in-startups\/\">tax benefits<\/a>; however, it depends on when you and your partner were born (must be after 5th April 1935) and how much is your income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lower earner with income less than the personal allowance can transfer their unused allowance up to \u00a31,260 to their partner in 2022-23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The low-earning partner&#8217;s income before tax must be less than \u00a312,570 for the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/what-is-the-tax-year\/\">tax year<\/a>. However, the higher-earning partner&#8217;s income must be between \u00a312,571 and \u00a350,270.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Dividend allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Being self-employed, if you have company shares, you can earn money in two ways, by selling shares or from dividends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2022-23, you don&#8217;t pay tax on dividend income of \u00a32,000, which is your <a style=\"color:#9B51E0;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/tax-free-child-care-for-the-self-employed\/\">tax-free<\/a> dividend allowance. Above that, you pay tax as per your tax band, also known as the marginal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experlu.co.uk\/blog\/corporation-tax-rate-increases-in-april-2023\/\">tax rate<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Income tax band<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Dividend tax rate<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Basic rate<\/td><td>8.75%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Higher rate<\/td><td>33.75%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Additional rate<\/td><td>39.35%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Personal savings allowance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can generate a specific income from the interest on your savings per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Basic rate taxpayers, earning on savings interest is up to \u00a31,000, and for higher rate taxpayers, it is up to \u00a3500. But, additional rate, taxpayers won&#8217;t receive a personal savings allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When can a tax rate change?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax rates and allowances remain the same throughout a tax year and can only change at the beginning of a new tax year. The tax year starts on 6th April of one year to 5th April of the following year. For example, the tax year 2022\/23 begins on 6th April 2022 and ends on 5th April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government announces any tax changes during their Budget announcement, organized before a new tax year starts, except for an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the recent budget announcements, HMRC announced an update on National Insurance and dividend tax rates.
