What is audit? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The word audit is derived from a Latin word\u00a0Audiere, meaning\u00a0“to hear”.\u00a0 In ancient times, auditors<\/a><\/strong> used to report on the accuracy of data based on the oral representations. This role has evolved over the centuries. Modern 21st\u00a0<\/sup>century auditors typically report on both\u00a0verbal and written data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purpose of audit <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Depending upon the type of audit<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0the audit’s primary purpose is to verify the underlying transactions and events to express\u00a0an audit opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of audit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

External audit\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An external audit is the independent examination of the entity’s financial statements to express as audit opinion whether the financial statements give a true and fair view. Qualified auditors usually conduct it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auditors usually report to the shareholder in the annual general meeting (AGM) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who needs an external audit in the UK?<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf a public company (unless it’s dormant) 
\u25cf a subsidiary company (unless it\u202fqualifies for an exception<\/a>) 
\u25cf an insurance company  
\u25cf involved in banking or issuing e-money 
\u25cf a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) investment firm or an Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) management company

Who qualifies for audit exemption?<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A company usually qualifies for an audit exemption if it has met at least two of the following conditions: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25cf an annual turnover less than \u00a310.2 million 
\u25cf assets less than \u00a35.1 million 
\u25cf Average number of employees is 50 or less <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can my accountant conduct an audit?<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually,\u00a0all auditors are qualified accountants<\/a><\/strong>;\u00a0however, all accountants are not auditors. To conduct an audit, auditors need extensive training and must possess an\u00a0audit practising certificate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internal audit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It is an internal, independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an entity’s operations. It assists an entity in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluating and improving internal risk management, control environment and governance processes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internal audit function usually reports to the audit committee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
